Placement of Living Room Furniture

When working on the placement of your living room furniture, you may become overwhelmed about where to start and what you should be focusing on to create a well balanced living room where you want to spend your time. If you have never done this before, here are a few simple tips to help you through the process.

Start with the most important piece of furniture, the sofa. Ideally it should be placed flush along the wall of the living room. It is never a good idea to have large pieces of furniture on a diagonal as it takes too much space and can leave the room feeling small. Try to maintain easy access to the sofa by allowing direct access to it from the entry of the living room.

Take some time to consider how you will arrange your chairs around the sofa. Also keep in mind that your goal is to keep the room balanced. It can be easily unbalanced by placing too much furniture at one end of the room that creates a horizontal imbalance or too much furniture that is either top heavy or bottom heavy that creates a vertical imbalance. It is important to maintain the balance as it may always feel like an uncomfortable room.

If you have a modular sofa i.e. a sofa made from modules that can be rearranged into different configurations, you will have a number of options when working on a layout for your living room. One option is to use one module as a long lounge and position it along the wall. This will create a focal point that you can work with to place the remaining sections of the sofa on the opposite side of the room to maintain a horizontal balance.

Although we have said that placing the sofa against the wall as a focal point is a good idea, there are a further considerations to take into account to make sure you have chosen the best placement. If the living room is quite small, placing chairs opposite the sofa may make the room feel smaller than it actually is. This may be due to the sofa being too large for the room. Your only option in this case is to consider purchasing a new sofa of a proportionate size to the room. Remember that the goal is to maintain balance.
